Article: An Historic Day at Monza
An Historic Day at Monza
An historic moment as Jim Redman guides the Honda Six between the carabinieri and his pitlane audience at Monza in September 1964.
With two events remaining in the race for that year’s world championship title, Redman had to win both races (in Italy and Japan) to beat Yamaha’s Phil Read to the crown.
But with the eyes of the racing world on him, Redman suffered a brutal anti-climax to the occasion as overheating issues slowed the engineering masterpiece as he held the Yamaha challenge of Phil Read at bay.
Both Read and his team mate Mike Duff passed Redman before the chequered flag, ending his world title challenge for the season.
His frustration was heightened six weeks later when he beat Read by half a lap at Suzuka in Japan, clearly demonstrating the engineering prowess which was to dominate grand prix racing for the next four years after which Honda withdrew from world championship road racing.
